Criterion: Solid Waste
Requirements for managing, reducing, and recycling non-hazardous solid waste
Full Description
C3. Solid Waste
Code 7.0
Participants shall implement a systematic approach to identify, manage, reduce, and responsibly dispose of or recycle solid waste (non-hazardous). Waste data shall be tracked and documented.
C3.1 Solid waste is managed and disposed of responsibly.
Conformance Requirements
Site Observations
- Engineering controls are used where appropriate.
- Waste is adequately and effectively:
- i. Categorized
- ii. Handled
- iii. Stored
- iv. Moved within a single facility / multiple facility.
- v. Access is controlled
- Potential employee exposure methods are adequate and effective, such as:
- i. Segregation
- ii. Secondary containment
- iii. Ventilation
- iv. Fire protection
Record Review
- Process and administrative controls are in place and effective.
- Accurate waste inventory records are maintained, tracked, and accurate.
- Inspection records of waste and their storage points are maintained and accurate.
- Copies of waste manifests and shipping papers are maintained and accurate.
- All transport and disposal vendors have approved, current certificates and/or are licensed by the local regulatory authorities.
Management Interview
- Applicable
Worker Interview
- Interview workers who work with waste or are responsible for waste storage.

Change Log
1.1.0 (2022-06-01)
Removed
- Explicit per-criterion rating bands replaced by generic global rubric; conformance set reduced: The explicit 7.0.0 per-criterion rating bands (Priority = environmental emissions that could cause imminent community impact; Major = no control programs / no baseline / two-or-more minimum elements missing; Minor = one minimum element missing) were replaced by the generic 'See finding severity definition' global rubric. The standalone 'Additional assistance' block (resource-efficiency hierarchy guidance) and the detailed reduction-program record items were also dropped. Both are loosenings (they only remove ways to fail); no specific finding that passed under the old bands can be shown to fail under the generic rubric, hence minor.
1.0.0 (2021-01-01)
Changed
- Initial historical baseline — Solid Waste (RBA Code of Conduct 7.0, published as C4): Earliest imported version (published as C4 in VAP 7.0.0). Systematic approach to identify, manage, reduce and responsibly dispose of or recycle non-hazardous solid waste. Carried explicit per-criterion rating bands (Priority = imminent community impact; Major = no control programs / no baseline / two-or-more minimum elements missing; Minor = one element missing), a standalone 'Additional assistance' resource-efficiency hierarchy block, detailed reduction-program record items, and a 'No solid waste generated or stored on site' Not-Applicable exemption.
